About Us

Smith Ecology has two permanent members of staff, namely Peter Smith and Sheelagh Kerry. We also use a number of consultants with specialist skills under contract or as temporary employees as the work requires.

Dr Peter G. Smith CEnv, MCIEEM is director of Smith Ecology. He researched the ecology of Natterer's bats for his PhD, under the supervision of Professor Paul Racey at the University of Aberdeen. After gaining a BSc in Ecology from the University of London he worked as a software engineer for a number of years before working as a species advisor for the Countryside Council for Wales dealing mainly with bats. He studied bats in South American rainforests for 6 months in 1992 and started an ecological consultancy specialising in bats in 1994.

Sheelagh Kerry BSc is company secretary of Smith Ecology. Sheelagh has worked as a botanical field surveyor under contracts for the Countryside Council for Wales, Gwent County Council and Hampshire County Council and as conservation officer for Gwent Wildlife Trust. She obtained a bat workers licence in 1987 and surveyed for bats in South America in 1992 with Peter Smith. From 1997 until joining Smith Ecology in 2002, she carried out botanical surveys and bat work as a self-employed (part time) ecological consultant.
